This book is organized for you to read selectively. You do not need to read it from cover
to cover. I suggest that you read the first and second chapters, and then skip to the chapters
that are pertinent for your particular child. By reading the first chapter first, you will be better
able to understand all of the rest of the chapters. Chapter 1, “The Therapeutic Mountain,”
describes a paradigm for integrative medicine which I developed in 1994 and have taught to
thousands of pediatricians and parents to help us understand the relationship between different
types of therapies. This chapter covers the therapies, the professionals who recommend them,
and how to select a practitioner for your child. Chapter 2, “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” is a short
description of how you can evaluate claims for different treatments and decide which are ef
fective for your child.
Note on organization: To maintain a consistent, systematic, comprehensive approach, all of
the chapters on a particular illness and conditions are organized the same way, outlined in
Chapter 1. If you want a quick summary of how to treat a particular condition, see the last
section in each chapter, “What I Recommend.”
Note on gender: To avoid using cumbersome phrases such as he/she and him/her, I have
alternated males and females by chapter throughout the book. All of the case stories are
composite descriptions of patient encounters; to preserve patient confidentiality, fictitious
names, gender, and ethnicity are used
